The Manchester United board are reportedly considering hiring Jose Mourinho by the end of this month in a desperate bid to salvage the club’s season.
Manchester United are six points adrift of the top four after they lost 2-1 to Sunderland on Saturday.
Van Gaal admitted after the defeat that the club’s best chance of re-entering the Champions League is to win the Europa League trophy but they’re showing few signs of being able to compete against the teams in that competition.
Mourinho has been heavily linked with taking over at the Theatre of Dreams and, though he’d prefer to take up the hotseat in the summer, the Sun say United officials are considering bringing him in this month in a desperate bid to save the side’s faltering campaign.
United begin their Europa League campaign on Thursday before playing in the FA Cup. If Mourinho was to take over in the next fortnight his first league game would be against Arsenal at Old Trafford.
A tantalising thought…
