Liverpool sign Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle

Liverpool have signed Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle, the Premier League club have announced.

Newcastle were apparently keen to retain midfielder Wijnaldum for their Championship campaign, but reluctantly accepted a reported £25 million for the Dutch player, who arrived a year ago in a £14.5m transfer from PSV Eindhoven.

“The 25-year-old has signed a long-term deal with the Reds to seal a return to the Premier League and will now jet out to join the club’s ongoing tour of the United States,” read a statement on Liverpool‘s website.

Wijnaldum was Newcastle‘s leading scorer last season with 11 goals, though four of those came in a single match: the 6-2 league drubbing of Norwich.

His goals could not keep Newcastle in the top division, and his cameo appearance for Rafael Benitez’s side in the final minutes of a 2-2 pre-season friendly draw with Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday was his final match for the club.

“I’m really excited because Liverpool is a big club with a great history and it’s always a dream to play for as big a club as Liverpool,” Wijnaldum said after signing.
