Steffen Baumgart is hoping for goals from top striker Anthony Modeste with 1. FC Köln next season. “I would like to have him here,” said the coach of the future European Cup participant express“not only as footballers, but above all as people”.
Modeste, who scored 20 goals for FC last season, was recently linked with a possible move.
However, Baumgart sees the chances of the 34-year-old Frenchman staying in Cologne as good: “Tony has a contract and I’m happy that he’s here,” said Baumgart. “I can’t predict what will happen if an offer comes.”
The coach also doesn’t expect a change from Salih Özcan, who is said to be on the list for Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig: “I’m convinced of that. I don’t think he would be happy if he left.”
Meanwhile, Baumgart also sees his own future in Cologne in the long term: “I’ve always said that I didn’t take over FC to switch to the next bigger club after a year,” said the 50-year-old: “I have a big club here and I want to be successful with that.”
The first Bundesliga champions reached seventh place in the table after a strong debut season by coach Baumgart. The Cologne team, who had played against relegation in the previous year’s relegation, qualified for the Conference League.
