João Cancelo's bench at Bayern Munich: cryptic Instagram post

FC Barcelona are considering the possibility of a transfer from Bayern Munich’s João Cancelo. That reports the Spanish Sports. The Portuguese, who is currently on loan from Manchester City to Säbener Straße, is an interesting option for the coming season from a number of perspectives.

Barca have been looking for a new right-back for quite some time. The top candidates are actually Juan Foyth (Villarreal FC) and Diogo Dalot from Manchester United. However, both would be relatively expensive, and the cash-strapped Catalans cannot invest a lot of money.

In the case of Cancelo, on the other hand, it says in the Sports, one speculates on a commitment on loan. FC Bayern have already informed ManCity that they will not exercise the 70 million euro purchase option for the Portuguese international. But because Cancelo no longer has a future under Pep Guardiola in the Eastlands despite a contract that runs until 2027, it is likely that he will say goodbye again.

Since it is currently unlikely that a club will pay the high transfer fee City has requested for the 28-year-old, another loan could be the solution. And in that case, Barcelona want to strike.

Cancelo was already on the Blaugrana radar during his time at La Liga rivals Valencia CF. Mateu Alemany, now sports director at Barça, once worked as general manager in Valencia and handled his transfer to Inter at the time. In addition, the Spanish leaders maintain excellent contacts with Cancelo’s advisor Jorge Mendes.

Bayern Munich: João Cancelo to Barca?

Cancelo was trained in Benfica youth. From there he moved to Valencia FC in 2015 for a fee of 15 million euros. He was on loan at Inter in the 2017/18 season before Juventus landed him for €40.4m. The 65 million transfer to ManCity followed in 2019. A few weeks ago, FCB loaned him to the Bundesliga.

Cancelo has appeared in seven competitive games for Bayern so far. He provided three assists. However, he has not been on the pitch for the record champions for the full 90 minutes.

Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said on the sidelines of the Champions League second leg against PSG on the reserve role of the versatile defender: “João will still be a very important player for us.” However, he also admitted: “Lately he hasn’t played and trained the way he imagined.”
