FC Bayern: According to Bernd Dreher, Manuel Neuer had teething problems

Manuel Neuer matured into a Bundesliga goalkeeper at FC Schalke 04. But the first steps were anything but easy for the five-time world goalkeeper. This was reported by the former Schalke goalkeeping coach Bernd Dreher.

“The first six weeks were a bit difficult,” said Dreher in the BRBroadcast “Blickpunkt Sport”. “In the first six weeks he didn’t really understand what I wanted. But after that he understood and then things went really well.”

Neuer, who made his debut in the German national team as Schalke on June 2, 2009, moved from the Royal Blues to Bayern on a free transfer in 2011. Dreher worked as a goalkeeper coach at Schalke 04 from 2009 to 2012, previously the former Bayern substitute goalkeeper also worked for the German record champions between 2003 and 2008.

During this time, Dreher also worked with Michael Rensing, who was long considered the successor to Oliver Kahn at Bayern-Tor. “When I was still working with Oliver Kahn at Bayern, he always wanted to be like Oliver Kahn,” said Dreher, who then said to Rensing: “You will never be like Oliver Kahn.” Dreher added: “He was very offended.” But then he also said: “You have to let me finish: An Oliver Kahn will never be a Michael Rensing either. You have to go your own way.”

Rensing was under contract with FC Bayern from 2000 to 2010, after his contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf 2020 he ended his career.
