Pep Guardiola is said to have urged Manchester City to sack João Cancelo after he plugged in headphones at a team briefing.
Cancelo refused, according to a report by the Times, to listen to City coach Pep Guardiola at a team briefing in January and instead slumped to the ground with his headphones on. Shortly after the incident, Manchester’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain is said to have urged Cancelo to get rid of him. At the end of the month, the Portuguese international then switched to Bayern Munich.
Cancelo was a regular at City at the start of the 2022/23 season before being benched towards the end of 2022. The Portugal international reportedly didn’t react well to this before being loaned to Munich.
Barcelona were looking to sign the 29-year-old in January but manager Xavi recently said City’s deal had been blocked, leading to him leaving for Bayern. The loan deal includes an option to sign Cancelo directly in the summer but the German champions are unlikely to take advantage of that opportunity.
The former Benfica and Inter player is also not expected to return to City. Cancelo could still end up at Barça. Talks are reportedly ongoing over a loan move to Camp Nou.
