Borussia Dortmund again with a deficit of 35.1 million euros

Despite an upward trend, Borussia Dortmund was again in the red with Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA in the 2021/22 financial year. On Friday, BVB reported a deficit of 35.1 million euros on its balance sheet PK, compared to 72.8 million euros in the previous year.

Hans-Joachim Watzke mercilessly nipped the fans’ bold dreams as well as the persistent media speculation in the bud. “Cristiano Ronaldo and Borussia Dortmund – that’s very charming at first glance. I love this player. He’s one of the greatest players the world has ever seen,” emphasized the BVB boss – and pushed the big but right after: “There is no contact at all between the parties involved and therefore certainly no transfer.”

And a 37-year-old doesn’t correspond to the Borussia philosophy either. “We have to invest even more in the youth and continue to focus on top talent. That’s certainly a strategy. But we also have to reckon with the fact that these players may leave us again after two or three years,” said Watzke, the chairman the management of the Dortmunder.

And the economic situation remains tense due to the pandemic. He subsequently provided the justification as part of the 50-minute balance sheet press conference of Westphalia. Despite an upward trend, the runner-up was again in the red with Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA in the 2021/22 financial year – the corona pandemic is still leaving its mark. BVB reported a deficit of 35.1 million euros, compared to 72.8 million euros in the previous year.

“We don’t have the leeway for big catch-up hunts,” said Watzke, referring to Bayern Munich’s croesus in the industry and also a costly signing from Ronaldo. In general, however, he recognized “a slight recovery effect”, mainly due to the increased ticket income. Despite the pandemic, it was “done quite well”, the shortfall is mainly due to the lower TV income due to the early end of the European Cup.

BVB: Watzke denies the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo

Compared to the previous season, which was even more affected by the pandemic, total sales grew from 358.6 to 456.9 million euros and thus at least reached the pre-corona level again. But Watzke warned: “The next big wave will be tight, that’s for sure. We can’t play another six months without spectators, then we would have a massive problem in German football.”

Overall, BVB was in the red for the third year in a row. “We want to be in the black again by 2023/24 at the latest and then create the conditions for us to pay dividends again,” said Watzke. For the season that has already begun, a forecast because of the corona pandemic and energy crisis is “like playing the lottery,” he explained. Despite all the optimism, there is “a residual risk”.

In general, Borussia “sensitized all employees and discussed specific things in the current acute energy crisis,” said Watzke. Targeted measures such as doing without air conditioning, reducing the operating times of energy-intensive devices or a public transport ticket included in the season ticket have already been implemented, and more are to follow.

Unlike a Ronaldo transfer. In view of the clear denials, there will be no such thing.
