Borussia Mönchengladbach has signed national player Julian Weigl from Benfica Lisbon. The 27-year-old, who was already on loan from the Portuguese record champions in the current 2022/23 season, signed a contract with the club until June 2028.
According to Benfica, Weigl costs Borussia a transfer fee of around 7.2 million euros.
“Julian is an important building block for our team in terms of his footballing class, but also in terms of his personality,” said sporting director Roland Virkus about the midfielder. Weigl “immediately became one of the leading players” in Gladbach.
The former Dortmund and Munich lion played 20 competitive games (one goal) for VfL. He was “full of anticipation for what’s to come” and “great desire to lead the way,” he said.
