Borussia Mönchengladbach has ended its winning streak in the Bundesliga.
The end of the “Bayern curse” was an Easter redemption. The professionals from Borussia Mönchengladbach hugged each other in relief, the fans applauded and were reconciled – in the sixth game after the triumph over Bayern Munich on February 18, the five-time German champions finally celebrated a Bundesliga win again.
Coach Daniel Farke’s team defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 (1-0) after five unsuccessful matches, but remains in tenth place like their opponents (9th) in no man’s land in the table. “It’s very good and it was important,” said Florian Neuhaus at DAZN: “It only works together with the fans. We deserved to win – and that counts. That should give us tailwind.”
Nathan Ngoumou (34′) and Marcus Thuram (63′) scored the goals for Gladbach. Wolfsburg went off the field as a loser again after five games without defeat and continues to lose ground in the fight for the European Cup places.
The guests immediately took command in front of 51,127 spectators in Borussia Park. Omar Marmoush missed the great opportunity for an early lead from close range with his unplaced header (5th).
Wolfsburg then had long periods of possession and celebrated after ten minutes. Marmoush was ruled offside when national player Felix Nmecha passed the ball, referee Timo Gerach took the goal back.
Wolfsburg makes the game – Gladbach the goals
The hosts could see the uncertainty after the recent poor performance. At first, Borussia failed offensively, but defensively there were always gaps. U21 national player Kilian Fischer narrowly missed the Gladbach goal (25th). Overall, however, the Lower Saxony acted too imprecisely in the last third to capitalize on their superiority.
After half an hour, the whistles of the home fans got louder – that had an effect. After a bad pass by VfL goalkeeper Koen Casteels, the ball landed via captain Lars Stindl and Thuram at Ngoumou, who scored his first goal of the season for the unexpected half-time lead.
Wolfsburg also started the second half with more momentum and had a great chance to equalize through Mattias Svanberg. However, the Swede failed because of the attentive Gladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin (47th).
Overall, Wolfsburg came up with too little to crack the Gladbach defense bar. VfL coach Niko Kovac brought on Luca Waldschmidt and Kevin Paredes after an hour – but Borussia scored the goal again. Thuram headed in from close range.
