BVB, News: Sebastian Kehl explains Dortmund’s transfer strategy
Sports director Sebastian Kehl looked back on BVB’s transfer summer in an interview with the club’s website. An analysis of the previous season made those responsible “that we wanted to be a little earlier on the transfer market at one point or another so as not to lag behind developments. We wanted to proactively set exclamation marks.”
The second in the Bundesliga from the previous season, who was eliminated relatively early in the cup competitions, not only installed coach Edin Terzic as the successor to the dismissed Marco Rose, but was also quite active on the transfer market. Among others, Niklas Süle (FC Bayern Munich), Nico Schlotterbeck (SC Freiburg) and Sébastien Haller (Ajax) came, who will not be available for the time being due to a testicular cancer diagnosis.
Kehl says: “We are very hopeful that something really good can come about this season with what we have set in motion – with a new coach and his team, which has caused a lot of euphoria in the environment.” However, such a major upheaval also takes time.
Kehl also cited the many injuries as a reason for the mixed pre-season. And: “Last season I lacked the necessary resistance in a few games. I’ll be honest about that. Of course it can be a bit bumpy at the beginning of the season, we know that, but this unconditional resistance is what we all want and want I can feel it at any time.”
The former BVB captain, who took over the post from sports director Michael Zorc in the summer, also emphasized that the changes in the summer would help sharpen the performance culture within the club again “and also bring an uncompromising spirit of winning to the team”. Borussia have already had a successful start to the season with two victories in the Bundesliga and a 3-0 win against 1860 Munich in the first round of the cup.
BVB, News: Trip abroad during the World Cup?
Sports director Kehl spoke about BVB’s plans during the long World Cup break from mid-November to mid-January. “We have already thought about it and will finalize it in the coming weeks. There will certainly be phases in which we will put a strain on the team,” said Kehl in an interview with bvb.de.
The squad could therefore be supplemented with players from the U23 and U19 to replace the World Cup drivers. “Possibly there will also be an opportunity to go on a trip abroad in order to further explore the topic of internationalization for us,” Kehl continued.
Eintracht Frankfurt is also pursuing similar plans, the Hessians want to start a week-long tour to Japan in November. Cologne and Stuttgart are planning trips to the USA. The world championship will take place from November 20th to December 18th this year. Accordingly, the Bundesliga is taking a relatively long break.
BVB, News: Sébastien Haller is training in the weight room again
After his testicular cancer surgery at the end of July, Sébastien Haller is already back in the gym. His wife Priscilla published photos of the striker during a workout in a BVB outfit on Instagram.
The 28-year-old is currently undergoing chemotherapy and, according to Sebastian Kehl, the operation a few weeks ago went well. Nevertheless, newcomer Haller will definitely miss BVB for several months, probably the entire first half of the season.
The testicular tumor was discovered during an examination during the training camp in Bad Ragaz. Haller then immediately returned to Dortmund for further examinations, where the diagnosis was confirmed. BVB recently signed Anthony Modeste to replace the attacker.
