Eintracht Frankfurt mourns club icon Bernd Nickel. The former Hessen midfielder died on Wednesday morning after a long illness at the age of 72.
“With Bernd Nickel we are losing one of the club’s great identifying figures. Our condolences go to his family,” said President Peter Fischer.
Between 1968 and 1983 Nickel played 426 Bundesliga games for Eintracht and scored 141 goals. In addition to three triumphs in the DFB Cup, “Dr. Hammer”, as the fans called him because of his hard shot, also won the 1980 UEFA Cup with the Frankfurt team.
