Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart sings the Bochum anthem by Herbert Grönemeyer

Steffen Baumgart from 1. FC Köln continues to work on his status as a cult coach in the Bundesliga. A video on Twitter shows him on Saturday evening singing along to the VfL Bochum club anthem.

The video was distributed by Effzeh’s Twitter account and shows Baumgart singing along to a line from Herbert Grönemeyer’s “Bochum” when entering the stadium interior. The anthem has absolute cult status not only in Bochum and is considered one of the most beautiful club songs in Germany.

“Here, where the heart still counts, not big money,” is the text passage where Baumgart gets involved. With the video, the people of Cologne also sent a dig at Rhenish arch-rival Fortuna Düsseldorf (Here’s the video).

In the anthem, Grönemeyer not only sings about his hometown of Bochum, but also asks the rhetorical question: “Who lives in Düsseldorf anyway?” That line of text also includes the tweet from 1. FC Köln.

Baumgart and the Cologne team didn’t get three points, despite the sympathetic singing performance in Bochum. In the end, the teams parted 2-2 draw.

Baumgart had already caused a stir last week with an extra-sports campaign: the 50-year-old revealed himself to be an avid jersey collector and, after the game against FC Bayern (0:4), got his cap in exchange, which also already has a cult following status, Manuel Neuer’s jersey.

“The cap is already legendary, everyone would like to have it. I’m glad that I have it now,” said Neuer. “I’ve wanted a jersey from Manu for a very, very long time. And he asked me about the hat. It was just right,” explained Baumgart.
