Cologne's Wehrle shoots against politics: "Rationally inexplicable"

After the politicians decided to continue to adhere to the strict Corona regulations, Cologne’s outgoing CFO Alexander Wehrle has now also voiced severe criticism. “It’s absolutely no longer proportionate. It can no longer be explained rationally,” Wehrle rumbled during the talk “Loss mer schwade”.

The professional clubs had hoped that the political decision-makers at their conference on Monday would relax the spectator restrictions, but this did not happen. According to Oliver Kahn, Markus Söder (CSU) announced that he would relax the strict ban on viewers, at least in Bavaria. For the time being, however, there are no significant and nationwide increases in the number of viewers.

For Wehrle, this decision is absolutely incomprehensible. The clubs have demonstrated the viability of their hygiene concepts, “out in the open, with the digital traceability of the chain of infection, the distance, the masks, the time slots on entry and the 2G rule that we had at FC in August.” , he said.

In addition, he did not shy away from clear criticism of the work of the current and previous governments. “If politicians had already agreed to a 2G rule in August, then we wouldn’t have all that shit now either. What politicians did well and correctly at the beginning has recently made it worse from month to month.” , he clarified.

The argument that major events would lead to hotspots is incomprehensible to Wehrle. “Which hotspots? In the past few months, we have proven that no chains of infection have emerged at major events, including ice hockey, handball, basketball and culture,” says Wehrle.

Wehrle shoots against upper limits: “Not at all understandable”

He also accuses those responsible of arbitrariness in setting upper limits. “It is incomprehensible at all that in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg there are 2,000 of the 2,100 possible spectators in a closed room, and a few kilometers further in the Hamburg stadium there are also 2,000, because that is the limit. Who set the 2,000 in Hamburg ? And who the 750 in Cologne? And who the 1000 in Mainz?”, said Wehrle. He also added sarcastically: “Do they actually roll dice?”

Wehrle also agreed with the statement by Borussia Dortmund’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, who sees football as a “victim of symbolic politics”. Wehrle welcomes the fact that Watzke is considering legal action: “We stand side by side with BVB.”
