"Disrespectful!" Borussia Mönchengladbach's sporting director Roland Virkus defends Yann Sommer

Sports director Roland Virkus from Borussia Mönchengladbach has defended his former goalkeeper Yann Sommer after the recent criticism.

“I find it disrespectful how you deal with him,” said Virkus: “I don’t think it’s ok to dump everything on him. It’s always the problem of the whole and not of an individual.” Sommer switched from the foals to record champions Bayern Munich in winter.

Some experts had recently criticized the Swiss after the 0: 3 in the Champions League at Manchester City.

Sommer is “definitely” being treated unfairly at the moment, Virkus emphasized: “As a goalkeeper, you’re bound to have a game that’s not so good. But that doesn’t diminish a goalkeeper’s lifetime achievement.” The former Gladbacher is “one of the best goalkeepers in Europe”.

Former national player Dietmar Hamann, for example, rated Sommer as “crazy overwhelmed” in Manchester on Tuesday. In particular, some experts had chalked it up to Rodri’s 0: 1 from a distance.

“These are the centimeters he is missing. Manuel Neuer would have saved the shot,” said ex-keeper Roman Weidenfeller sky.
