Ex-coach could not believe the change from Serge Gnabry to FCB

A former coach of Serge Gnabry has revealed that he couldn’t believe his move to Bayern Munich when he found out about it. The national player had disappointed too much at the time.

Gnabry was on loan from Arsenal to West Bromwich Albion in the 2015/16 season. After a short time, however, the deal turned out to be a big misunderstanding. Current statements from the then coach Toy Pullis show how catastrophic the impression was that Gnabry left in West Bromwich.

“He’s doing a fantastic job now, but back then he wasn’t even remotely close to such performances. He was even substituted in a reserve game,” Pullis said talkSPORT.

Pullis was also surprised when Gnabry was signed by FC Bayern Munich in 2017. “I still remember phoning my former assistant Dave Kemp and telling him that Gnabry had gone to Bayern Munich. Kemp just said it had to be his twin brother. It can’t possibly be the player we had.” he explained.

Gnabry had disappointed across the board for West Bromwich. The winger only played 137 minutes for the “Thrushes”.

The 27-year-old returned to London after just six months before leaving the Gunners permanently the following summer. Werder Bremen then paid a transfer fee of five million euros, and a year later Bayern finally struck for eight million euros and immediately loaned Gnabry to TSG Hoffenheim for a year.

Unlike in West Bromwich, Gnabry knew how to convince both on the Weser and in the Kraichgau. Since his actual arrival in Munich in 2018, he has been part of the extended group of regular players.
