FC Augsburg - Borussia Dortmund 0: 3: BVB passes the test in Augsburg and is on a master class

Golden match point for Borussia Dortmund in the dramatic master thriller: Edin Terzic’s team mercilessly exploited Bayern Munich’s through ball thanks to Sebastien Haller and took the lead in the table with a 3-0 (0-0) win at FC Augsburg before the season finale.

With a win next Saturday in the home game against Mainz, BVB would be German champions for the ninth time, for the first time since 2012.

In the midst of the black and yellow ecstasy, Sebastien Haller laughed from ear to ear, then he ran to the wild victory dance in front of the BVB curve. The Ivorian striker from Borussia Dortmund writes the best story of this crazy Bundesliga season ten months after discovering his cancer – and only 90 minutes are missing after the 3-0 (0-0) at FC Augsburg to the fairytale end of the championship.

In the dramatic title race against Bayern Munich, the otherwise so fickle Dortmunders actually turn into the home stretch in the lead. “It’s unbelievable. I never would have thought six months ago that I would be in this situation,” said the delighted double goalscorer. “Now we want to achieve the greatest. I’m just proud.”

Kehl brakes: “Need another 90 minutes

A win on Saturday against FSV Mainz 05 is what millions of football fans have been waiting for for ages: the series champions from Munich would be dethroned after ten years. “We have taken a giant step,” said Sebastian Kehl in the DAZN interview. “The euphoria will be huge, we will absorb it and take it with us.”

However, the sports director didn’t want to get carried away too much: “We need another 90 minutes. We can’t let that take us anymore!”

Anyone who saw how relieved Borussia was, how Mats Hummels romped across the pitch with his son Ludwig and Edin Terzic jabbed an index finger in the air, can no longer have any great doubts. “I really don’t want to slow that down,” Kehl said in an interview, “but please let’s draw the conclusion next week. It’s not over yet.”

BVB outnumbered for a long time after being sent off

The clearly superior Borussia took advantage of the opportunity after Bayern’s 3-1 draw against Leipzig: in front of 30,660 spectators, striker Haller scored the lead in the 59th minute – and six minutes before the end also the second goal. Julian Brandt (90+3) scored the final score. FCA were outnumbered from the 38th minute after Felix Uduokhai saw red for an emergency brake.

BVB also ended the away curse that had lasted for three months. Since the 1-0 win in Hoffenheim on February 25, Borussia had not won in six away games. For FCA, who have only been successful in one of their last ten games, things are getting tight again in the relegation battle.

The Dortmund fans were in a masterful mood even before kick-off. “Only BVB will be German champions,” they sang loudly. Not even the absence of Jude Bellingham could dampen confidence. As expected, the young star was absent due to persistent knee problems, but he is hoping for a comeback against Mainz.

Haller redeems Dortmund – Kobel saves against Cardona

Even without the Englishman, the determined Borussia took the initiative. FCA could hardly free themselves from the pressure of the guests. Brandt, Marius Wolf and Karim Adeyemi caused danger.

It was a one goal game. Haller (20′) and Brandt (33′) failed because of the strong reaction of Tomas Koubek, then Niklas Süle hit the post with his head (40′). Shortly before that, Uduokhai had been sent off due to an emergency brake on Donyell Malen after video evidence. It was at least a debatable decision. The FCA got into even more trouble from then on. The bulwark held until the break.

Even after the change, the same picture: a BVB storm in which Emre Can (54th) only hit the post before Haller redeemed Borussia. His shot bounced off the inside post and into the goal. The joy almost lasted only seconds, but the substitute Cardona found his master in Gregor Kobel in the only FCA chance up to that point.

The game changed – BVB showed nerves that Haller finally calmed down.

FC Augsburg – Borussia Dortmund: The voices of the game

Enrico Maassen (FC Augsburg coach): “My team gave everything. The key scene was of course the red card. It was very tough, even if you can give it. That’s annoying. In the end it wasn’t possible to get a point against this individual class. Now comes in Gladbach, of course, even more pressure.”

Edin Terzic (Borussia Dortmund coach): “The win was extremely important. When Augsburg got tired, the boys were there. That was really good. I’m very satisfied with the performance and the table constellation. We’re happy that we’re in this situation at all. This year we are as close as we’ve been in a long time. But we’re not done yet.”
