FC Bayern: Appeal against Dayot Upamecano's ban

It stays the same: Bayern Munich will have to do without the suspended defender Dayot Upamecano in the top Bundesliga game against Union Berlin (5.30 p.m.) on Sunday.

The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) has rejected the appeal of the French national player after his red card in the Bundesliga game at Borussia Mönchengladbach (2: 3) because of unsportsmanlike conduct.

The court thus followed the previous single-judge decision, in which Upamecano had been suspended for one game.

“The referee has made a factual decision. These are protected by FIFA in the interests of a functioning game operation worldwide. The only exception to this would be an obvious error on the part of the referee,” said sports court chairman Stephan Oberholz if there was demonstrably no contact between the player and his opponent. However, neither is the case here. Irrespective of this, according to the television pictures and the descriptions of the referee, the existence of an error is doubtful.”

Upamecano was sent off last Saturday in the 8th minute by referee Tobias Welz (Wiesbaden) after an emergency brake on Alassane Pléa. Coach Julian Nagelsmann had complained massively about the dismissal and had become abusive to the referee team in the dressing room (“softened pack”). Nagelsmann was fined 50,000 euros for this on Wednesday.
