FC Bayern: criticism of Dayot Upamecano

Alexander Zickler has criticized Dayot Upamecano for his mistake in FC Bayern’s 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Meanwhile, Stefan Effenberg described coach Julian Nagelsmann’s tactics as “extremely risky”.

“Unfortunately, he’s always good for mistakes like that,” said Zickler im sports1-One-two: “He should have cleared the ball forward, then nothing would have happened.”

Shortly before halftime, Upamecano tried to play the ball back with the first contact to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. But the plan failed, Gladbach’s Marcus Thuram took advantage of the mistake and put the guests in the lead in the 43rd minute. Leroy Sane equalized in the 83rd minute.

Zickler, who knows Upamecano from his time at RB Salzburg and wore the Bayern shirt himself between 1993 and 2005, also blamed Bayern Munich’s style of play for the fact that things often get complicated for the central defenders.

“They always have one-on-one situations. You just can’t make any mistakes there,” said the 48-year-old, who was last employed as Marco Rose’s assistant coach at Borussia Dortmund.

Effenberg: Nagelsmann’s tactic “extremely risky”

Stefan Effenberg agreed with Zickler. “Julian Nagelsmann’s tactics involve enormous risk and are extremely willing to take risks,” said the 54-year-old.

However, according to Effenberg, Upamecano should have solved the situation differently: “Even if he had hit the ball, how does he want to play back the 50 meters in this situation?”

Nagelsmann: “He wants the clean solution”

“He wants a clean solution, he wants to stay in safe possession and play to Manuel Neuer. But anyone who has played football knows how difficult it is when the ball comes at you and you want to extend it backwards. Normally he has to play with your left foot or head forward”, Nagelsmann had previously criticized the Frenchman’s mistake.

However, the Bayern coach also said: “Up until then and afterwards he played very well. He’s been playing exceptionally well this season, so mistakes can happen.”
