FC Bayern – Dietmar Hamann on the dismissal of Toni Tapalovic: "If Neuer hadn't been injured, he would still be here"

Dietmar Hamann commented on Toni Tapalovic’s departure from FC Bayern and praised the German record champions for separating from the 42-year-old.

“Crazy is simple: If Neuer hadn’t injured himself, Tapalovic would still be there,” said Hamann in an interview with the Schweizer Zeitung View. “But that’s how the personnel suddenly became more important. Basically, Neuer overestimated his position. He was the best goalkeeper in the world, yes. But he wasn’t for the last two or three years.”

The 49-year-old considers Tapalovic’s dismissal to be “right and consistent”: “Is Tapalovic interested in summer holding up well? I don’t want to accuse him of anything, but you can question that. And when Neuer comes back, Tapalovic is automatically there too back on Neuer’s side. He had no interest in creating competition for his friend,” said Hamann.

That’s another reason why Sven Ulreich was number two behind Neuer for years: “Ulreich was promoted, who can’t be dangerous – while Alexander Nübel didn’t do that for 18 months.”

Hamann does not believe that Neuer will return to the goal of the German record champions. The relationship is too strained for that. “No, I don’t think Neuer will play for Bayern again.”
