Maria KeaneFormer Bayern player Javi Martinez has revealed that the side initially had doubts about Alphonso Davies after his move to Munich from the Vancouver Whitecaps.
“With Davies, we thought at the beginning: what a disaster! Technically, he wasn’t up to par, and he made a lot of tactical mistakes,” Martinez told journalist Gerard Romero’s Twitch stream, adding: “Sure, he was just 18 but we really felt like he couldn’t compete at that level.”
In a very short time, the Canadian nipped the doubts in the bud and made an impressive development. “It was brutal. I always say: The difference between the 3rd and 1st divisions isn’t that huge. It’s about adapting to the rhythm and pace of the game. Few can do it. Davies did it,” said the Spaniard.
After arriving in January 2019, Davies initially played for the second team and only made short appearances in the Bundesliga. In the following season, the left-back was already part of the regular squad.
Martinez, who played for Bayern between 2012 and 2021, also had words of praise for Thomas Müller. “He’s the smartest player I’ve ever played with,” said the two-time treble winner. From a technical perspective, the 32-year-old is “not Thiago, Sane or Schweinsteiger. But he is always well positioned. He always knows where to go, recognizes the space. That’s the good thing about him.”
In the same livestream, the Qatar SC midfielder also gushed about David Alaba. You can find these statements here.
