FC Bayern Munich: Leon Goretzka is struggling with the FCB season

Leon Goretzka is at odds with the past season at FC Bayern Munich. The midfielder also speaks in the interview sky about the change from Niklas Süle and the further transfers of BVB.

“We weren’t up to par in the important games – that wasn’t Bayern-like,” said Goretzka, who is currently at the training camp in Marbella with the national team. The German record champions were eliminated relatively early in the cup competitions: in the DFB Cup in the second round against Gladbach (0: 5), in the Champions League against FC Villarreal in the quarter-finals.

Especially the end in the premier class is still nagging at the midfielder. “Being kicked out in the Champions League hasn’t happened to us in recent years against opponents like this. Without denying Villarreal the quality, but we have to get on there. So this season was not satisfactory overall, which is extremely motivating for many at the club to do it in the to do better again next year,” he explained.

Despite the “pretty good, if not excellent, first half of the season”, FC Bayern, who after all celebrated their tenth championship in a row, have “many things to improve”.

In the second half of the season, Bayern were unable to fall back on Goretzka, who suffered from persistent knee problems, for long stretches. That “didn’t really let him get going. I want to avoid injuries next season. That’s the most important thing anyway and then I want to help my team even more to achieve their goals.”

Goretzka: Süle farewell to FC Bayern “a shame”

In addition, Goretzka commented on the developments on the transfer market. While rival BVB has already signed four players in Karim Adeyemi, Nico Schlotterbeck, Salih Özcan and Niklas Süle, Bayern have only one player on the credit side in Noussair Mazraoui. “Indeed, the new signings from Dortmund are also here with us. It says that they are doing a good job there. You can say that quite clearly. But I have complete trust in the people responsible. We will definitely end up of the summer with a squad that we can achieve a lot with,” said Goretzka.

The former Schalke player particularly regrets the free transfer from Süle to Dortmund. “It’s not nice for us, but you still have to accept the player’s wishes,” emphasized Goretzka. It’s a shame for him because it’s a good buddy I’ve known since I was a kid. I really enjoyed playing with him.”

Goretzka: transfer rumours? “Don’t always take it seriously”

At Süle, lengthy contract negotiations had not led to a satisfactory result for both sides. A similar process could also threaten Serge Gnabry, whose working paper runs until 2023. “I don’t want to say anything about Serge’s possible departure now because I assume that he will stay with us. But you can tell that there are changes. That doesn’t always mean something bad,” said Goretzka.

The 27-year-old admitted transfer rumors don’t go unnoticed by the players. “I can’t hear ‘We don’t read that’ anymore. We already have one or two players with the typical apps on their cell phones,” he explained, adding: “But you can’t always do that for take full. You throw for that (the media; Note d. editor) too many names in the ring to discuss every personal detail with the buddies.”
