Marc-André ter Stegen in Bayern's goal? Why not!

Is there something going on between Marc-André ter Stegen and FC Bayern? The FC Barcelona goalkeeper would be a charming solution for the Munich team for several reasons.

FC Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat at relegation contenders Almería on Sunday night came as a big surprise. Nevertheless, the Catalans are still on course for the championship with a seven-point lead over Real Madrid. And: Barcelona still has the best defense in Europe.

The decisive goal of the evening was only the eighth goal for Barca in the 23 games so far this season. No other team is so solid in the back.

Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen played a decisive role in this. In his ninth season at FC Barcelona, the German is holding up better than ever. Ter Stegen has been almost flawless this season and is the great backbone of the Barca stronghold.

In the past, Ter Stegen was not without mistakes in the German national team. If the ex-Gladbacher got a chance in the goal of the DFB-Elf, he made several mistakes and uncertainties. That should change now. Manuel Neuer’s long injury is an opportunity for Ter Stegen in the national team. Also and especially with a view to the home European Championship 2024 in Germany.

FC Bayern: Will Marc-André ter Stegen follow Manuel Neuer?

“I believe that my performances over the past few years have been good and that I have matured in the national team and am ready for the next step,” said ter Stegen table football: “Of course I aspire to be number one: at Barca, but also in the national team.”

Neuer’s serious injury could also set another development in motion in ter Stegen’s career: Since Neuer broke his leg while skiing, FC Bayern have also been thinking more about the future as a goalkeeper. No matter how Neuer comes back after his recovery: When the contract ends in summer 2024, he will be 39 years old. Will Bayern then give him a high-paying follow-up contract again?

When considering a long-term Neuer successor, Bayern must have ter Stegen on the slip.

He was at least Germany’s second-best goalkeeper before Neuer’s injury. Should he oust Neuer from the German goal in the long term, that would be one more argument for the Bayern bosses: Historically, Bayern always wanted to have the German number one under contract.

Marc-André ter Stegen under contract with Barcelona until 2025

How Talent Alexander Nübel will develop is anyone’s guess. Ter Stegen, on the other hand, has been proving for years that he can keep a goal at a top level at a top club.

His age also speaks for ter Stegen. New representative Yann Sommer got a contract until 2025, by the end of the contract the Swiss will already be 36. Ter Stegen will then be 33, which is the best goalkeeper age. His contract in Barcelona ends this summer, 2025. Then he would even be available for free. Barcelona should have that in mind for possible negotiations in the summer of 2024.

Ter Stegen would certainly not have to be given up cheaply at this point in time – although the Catalans have an impressive strike list. Barcelona still remember well that they had to transfer around 50 million euros to Bayern for a then almost 34-year-old Robert Lewandowski a year before the end of his contract. But a new number one could be worth that much to Bayern. Or you just stay patient and wait for Ter Stegen’s contract to end in 2025. Then you just have to come to an agreement with the players.

It could possibly help that ter Stegen is advised by the ROOF agency, with which Bayern have excellent connections. Together they realized the transfer of Sadio Mané, organized the extension of Serge Gnabry’s contract and will almost certainly transfer Konrad Laimer to Munich next summer.

It is easy to imagine that the next talks between ROOF and Bayern will also be about Marc-André ter Stegen.
