FC Bayern, News: Sagnol analyzes Upamecano’s problem
Former defender Willy Sagnol has backed Bayern newcomer Dayot Upamecano. “Dayot needs time, the culture in Bavaria is different than in Leipzig. You have enormous competition every day, you are constantly in focus,” said Sagnol in an interview with the sports picture.
Since FC Bayern cultivate a very offensive game culture, Sagnol added, “it has particularly serious consequences if you make a mistake as a defender. I’m sure Upamecano will soon become a regular without any problems.”
Before the season, Upamecano switched from RB Leipzig to Munich for a fee of 42.5 million euros. So far, however, the Frenchman has not been able to fully convince.
Sagnol, who played a total of 277 competitive games for Bayern from 2000 to 2009, also defended his French compatriot Benjamin Pavard. “Sometimes the criticism is unfair,” said the 45-year-old. “I think Pavard plays very consistently, he’s rarely the best on the pitch, but he always does his job. Such a hard worker is enormously valuable for a coach. Many expect more from him, maybe he can do that too. But one should also appreciate his performance.”
According to Sagnol, the 80 million man Lucas Hernandez is a very good fit for Bayern. “Lucas was injured a lot at the beginning and it took a long time to adjust. Now he has arrived and is getting better and better,” said Sagnol, who has been the coach of the Georgian national team since February 2021.
