FC Bayern - Rummenigge on criticism of Qatar sponsorship: "Got good money"

Bayern Munich’s former chairman of the board, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, responded to the criticism of FCB fans about the sponsorship by the emirate of Qatar.

“Bayern Munich has a partnership with Qatar Airways, and I was never a Pharisee, if I may put it that way. We got good money from this contract,” the 66-year-old told im WDR.

“You basically have to say that in Qatar of all the Arab states there are the best or the greatest improvements in terms of human and labor rights at the moment. It is well known that they do not have a comparable standard to Germany or Europe,” continued Rummenigge . He was “fundamentally optimistic” that football could bring about improvements in this regard.

“For money we wash everything clean,” read a large banner in front of the south curve at the beginning of the second half of the Freiburg game, which the club had allegedly not approved. Below you could see Hainer and Kahn with a washing machine called “FCB AG”, which, for money, transforms blood-smeared shirts into crisp white. It was a further exacerbation of the long-lasting conflict between the club and the fans.

Of these, there has been criticism of the sleeve sponsor for years, which allegedly brings the club 17 million euros per season. The contract with the airline runs until 2023.

For many fans, progress in Qatar is far too slow, which is why the partnership is currently being called for as never before. After a corresponding motion, this will be voted on at the annual general meeting of FC Bayern on November 25th. A corresponding vote would not be binding, but it would put the bosses under additional pressure.
