FC Schalke 04 - BVB 2: 2: Borussia Dortmund has to be demolished in the Revierderby

FC Schalke 04 has interrupted Borussia Dortmund’s winning streak. S04 drew 2-2 (0-1) in front of their home crowd in the Revierderby on the 24th matchday of the Bundesliga.

  • Nico Schlotterbeck gave BVB the lead (38th). Shortly after the break, Schalke equalized through Marius Bülter (50th), but only ten minutes later Dortmund were back in front thanks to Raphael Guerreiro. Joker Kenan Karaman stabbed for S04 to 2: 2 (79th)
  • After 100 district derbies in the Bundesliga, the record is as follows: 37 BVB wins, 32 S04 wins, 31 draws.
  • Schalke and Dortmund remain the only unbeaten teams in the second half of the Bundesliga season.

FC Schalke 04 – BVB: The analysis

Dortmund deserved the lead after the first 45 minutes. BVB in the usual 4-1-4-1, but with Guerreiro as a half-left eighth in midfield. Along with Can and Bellingham, the Portuguese was the one who repeatedly dropped deeply in the build-up and created a majority. However, BVB initially lacked speed and depth in the passing game, also because Schalke’s chains were very narrow and defended aggressively.

Schalke did get a big chance (25′) after a defensive mistake by Zalazar from Dortmund (25′), but as the game went on the guests shifted the game more and more into S04’s half and became more determined because they often got behind the opposing defense. Malen still missed (30th), after the opening goal the miners started swimming and were lucky that it was only 0:1.

A slight loss of ball by Bellingham and precise switching allowed S04 to equalize shortly after the break. However, the hosts stuck to their very man-oriented defense against the ball, which gave Dortmund a lot of space in the center as soon as Borussia combined there. This is how the renewed leadership came about.

BVB retained control as a result, but should have made a lot more out of the large spaces and regular scoring opportunities. Schalke stayed in the game, biting in the duels and determined in the counterattack. Borussia then sometimes too sleepy and passive – as well as in the finally not undeserved 2: 2, which the miners worked out thanks to a high energy performance.

FC Schalke 04 – BVB: The data for the game

Gates: 0-1 Schlotterbeck (38′), 1-1 Bülter (50′), 1-2 Guerreiro (60′), 2-2 Karaman (79′)

The star of the game: Raphael Guerreiro (BVB)

The actual left-back played a strong game in an unfamiliar role. Guerreiro prepared the 1-0 and scored to 2-1. Had a lot of freedom in midfield, acted flexibly and almost always knew what to do with the ball.

The flop of the match: Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (BVB)

Disappointed again as a starting player. Barely won a one-on-one duel and tried to bang his head through the wall too many times. A good run before the 2:1, but messed up the 3:1 (65th). In addition, with an underground pass rate of only 50 percent of incoming passes.

The referee: Marco Fritz

Always kept track of things in a game without major excitement. Good body language.
