FC Bayern Munich, News: FCB probably thought about Xabi Alonso as a coach

A few years ago, FC Bayern wanted to bring Xabi Alonso to the coaching staff of the German record champions. The ex-CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the Picture confirmed.

“We once tried to get him as an assistant coach at Bayern Munich. Under Niko Kovac, I think,” said Rummenigge, who was impressed by the CV of the former Bayern star. “If someone had such a coach as Xabi, in Liverpool, at Real, at Bayern Munich, in the national team – and had incredible success everywhere, and is also a good guy, is so disciplined and empathetic – it would have to be the devil, if he doesn’t succeed as a coach.”

Rummenigge also sees Alonso on the right track with his current engagement in Leverkusen: “Leverkusen gave Xabi this chance and it looks like it was the right decision. They are getting better and better rolling.”

The 67-year-old also appreciates the former midfield strategist off the pitch: “I always liked him as a guy. He was a gentleman footballer on the pitch – but also in everyday life.”

With all the praise, could the Basque’s path eventually lead to Bayern Munich’s coaching bench? “I am convinced that he will go his own way as a coach, just like he did as a player,” said Rummenigge meaningfully.
