Hermann Gerland had problems with Hasan Salihamidzic at Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich’s long-time assistant and junior coach Hermann Gerland commented on his departure from Säbener Straße in the summer of 2021 and revealed that there were disagreements between him and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.

The assistant coach of national coach Hansi Flick said in a ‘double pass’ sports1 about his departure and the relationship with Salihamidzic: “It happens that two people can’t get along. […] I had problems with Hasan on campus! I made decisions, but then realized that things weren’t going right. There was more talk than training. […] If you want to train young people, you have to equip them with the necessary competitive toughness.”

Gerland continued: “I had 25 wonderful years, worked under the best coaches in the world and with the best players. I’m very happy that Hansi Flick brought me in back then and that I won so many titles with him . When he left, I left too.”

Gerland has worked for the record champions with interruptions since 1990. He held several positions, including in the junior division, where he discovered and promoted numerous future top stars. Later he was also an assistant to head coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Jupp Heynckes or Hansi Flick.

Regarding the current discussion about Mia-san-Mia, who may have been lost, the 68-year-old said: “The Mia-san-Mia feeling is different than it was ten years ago. It continues to develop. I didn’t see myself there anymore .”
