How, where and when Bayern Munich scores its goals

Since the arrival of Julian Nagelsmann, FC Bayern have scored almost three times as many goals as they have played in games. How, in which zones and when have the record champions’ hits come about so far? An overview.

The offensive machine FC Bayern is running at full speed.

The unexpected and avoidable 2-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt has not changed this impression. Julian Nagelsmann’s team has 47 goals in their account after 13 competitive games. She scored twelve of them against the fifth-rate Bremer SV in the first round of the DFB Cup, but a look at the score on goal against Frankfurt (eleven shots on Kevin Trapp’s box) is enough to determine how much quality the Munich team is bring the last third.

FC Bayern: How does the team under Julian Nagelsmann score the goals?

A clear pattern can be seen here: At the moment, there is still much more going out of the game than with standards. Of the 47 goals, only six were scored from corners, free kicks or penalties. 25 of the 41 hits from the game were scored with the right foot and 17 with the left foot. There were also four header goals and one own goal.

Nagelsmann’s explanation of the offensive standards still in need of improvement: “This is basically a very important topic, but not easy to integrate. We just have little training.” And further: “30 percent of the goals fall roughly according to the standards. 30 percent of the training units is then felt one in four weeks.”

Bayern Munich: In which zones will the goals be scored?

Nagelsmann does not see himself in the role of the trainer who manages a functioning world-class construct. With his weakness for flexible positional play – i.e. the correct and promising occupation of different rooms – as well as for aggressive counter-pressing in the opposing half, he stimulates the offensive game of FCB.

The fact that 41 of the 47 goals were scored within the opposing sixteen speaks on the one hand for a very good penalty area occupation and on the other hand for many high ball wins and a strong switching game. Exemplary for the counter-pressing demanded by Nagelsmann: the hit to the 3: 1 final score in the Supercup against Borussia Dortmund by Robert Lewandowski, which was made possible by a high ball win by Corentin Tolisso.

Goals from a distance like Joshua Kimmich’s precise low shot at 3-1 in Fürth or the “failed” cross from Leroy Sane at 5-0 against Dynamo Kiev have so far been a rarity.

FC Bayern: When will the goals fall?

From a cross-competitive perspective, there is no phase in which Bayern are slacking off.

Four of the eight Champions League goals were even scored between the 75th and 90th minute, which speaks for the very good physical condition of Nagelsmann’s team.

Based on the previous Bundesliga games, it can also be determined that FCB sprayed a lot of scoring danger just before and after the half-time break. Bayern scored 15 of their 24 league goals between the 30th and 75th minute.
