"I won't let you in!" When Jupp Heynckes was mad at Uli Hoeneß because of Pep Guardiola

In January 2013, Uli Hoeneß was already working on Pep Guardiola’s commitment as Bayern Munich coach. That got him in trouble with Jupp Heynckes.

At that time, the Munich team were on course for a treble, which they did at the end of the season by winning the German championship, triumphing in the DFB Cup and in the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Hoeneß had to inform his friend and then FCB coach Heynckes early that the German record champions would hire a new coach after the season. Heynckes was not exactly enthusiastic about it, as Hoeneß now reveals.

“Jupp, I say, we have something to discuss, I’ll come over to you now,” said the 71-year-old Süddeutsche Zeitung: “He says: ‘We have nothing to discuss, I won’t let you in!'”

Heynckes was living in Hoeneß’ apartment at the time, which is why he would have got in anyway with a spare key. But that wasn’t necessary, the 78-year-old opened the door anyway.

Heynckes: Guardiola? “This is a mistake”

“I’m flying to New York to make Guardiola Bayern coach from July 1,” Hoeneß told his friend. “I thought so! But that’s a mistake you’re making there,” Heynckes replied.

In any case, the upcoming change of coach did not have a negative impact on Bayern’s success. Hoeneß also gave the reason for this: “We played the best football that FC Bayern has ever played! Because the entire team showed 100 percent solidarity with Jupp.”
