Marcel Schäfer replaces Jörg Schmadtke as sports director

As expected, former professional Marcel Schäfer will succeed Jörg Schmadtke as Managing Director Sport at VfL Wolfsburg on February 1, 2023. The Lower Saxony officially announced this on Monday, the contract for the 38-year-old is initially valid for three years.

In his new position, the 38-year-old will also be responsible for the Wolfsburg football team. Sebastian Schindzielorz will take over Schäfer’s post as sporting director.

“It’s a big challenge that I’m going to take on with a lot of joy and enthusiasm,” said Schäfer, who has been working with Schmadtke at the North Germans for four years: “Jörg gave me the opportunity to learn, work independently and develop myself every day .”

In a statement, the Norddeutsche supervisory board justified the decision in favor of Schäfer, who was a member of the 2009 Wolfsburg championship team. “Marcel Schäfer not only has a proven track record of great expertise, but also identifies one hundred percent with the club and the region,” Frank Witter, chairman of the supervisory board, was quoted as saying.

Until he takes office, the former left-back is still under heavy pressure in his current position. The Wolves, who were still playing in the Champions League a year ago, are penultimate in the Bundesliga after a botched start to the season with just one win in seven games.

Schäfer has been closely associated with VfL for a long time. Born in Aschaffenburg, he wore the Wolfsburg jersey from 2007 to 2017. After a year abroad with the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the eight-time senior international returned to the Mittelland Canal twelve months later. Six years after winning the German championship in 2009, Schäfer also won the DFB Cup.
