Marcus Thuram caused trouble with a swallow in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 0-0 draw against SC Freiburg. Dietmar Hamann and Lothar Matthäus then took a hard swipe at Gladbach’s striker.
Thuram moved into the penalty area in the 65th minute, ran into Nicolas Höfler, hooked and then fell to the ground. Referee Benjamin Brand first decided on a penalty, but correctly withdrew his decision after viewing the video images.
“For me, Thuram should be suspended. For me, that’s a shame for football,” said Hamann afterwards sky: “It is a gross unsportsmanlike conduct – and a gross unsportsmanlike conduct will be punished with red.”
The 25-year-old Frenchman didn’t even see a yellow card for his action – clearly not enough for Hamann: “We try to teach the children the sport with respect and decency. And if one is blocked, you’ll see that it won’t more happen. After such an action, he should be banned. A warning that didn’t even exist is not enough punishment for me.”
Lothar Matthäus also demanded a penalty for Thuram. In any case, this is a repeat offender. “He wanted to cheat,” said the 61-year-old: “He has to realize that we have video evidence. The rascals will be exposed.”
“What Thuram is doing has nothing to do with sport. That shouldn’t happen. It’s ridiculous that he’s doing it at the highest level. It’s heading towards fraud,” said Stefan Effenberg in a double pass sports1.
Daniel Farke announces meeting with Marcus Thuram
Gladbach coach Daniel Farke announced a conversation with the offender after the game. He will tell Thuram “that he shouldn’t do that. Normally he doesn’t want to do something like that”.
It was not the first time that Thuram was noticed by gross unsportsmanlike behavior. In December 2020 he spat in the face of Hoffenheim’s Stefan Posch.
“Something happened today that is not in my character and must never happen again,” wrote the French international on Twitter at the time.
