Maria KeaneMats Hummels is keeping all options open when his contract with Borussia Dortmund expires next summer. “Of course” he is concerned with the right time to end his career, said the 2014 world champion in an interview with the Ruhr news: “But I will decide spontaneously.”
The past year was “unfortunately not good at all in terms of health”. “Among other things, the knee story has already shown me that there are a few years in the bones. At some point, when the time is right, I want to decide whether, and if so, how to proceed.”
The club wants to wait with a possible extension offer, for which Hummels (33) showed understanding in the training camp in Switzerland. “I just said to Sebastian Kehl that if I were BVB, I wouldn’t be extending my contract,” he said. “I think the relaxation that both sides are showing is just right.”
Hummels will have to fight for his place in central defense in the new season: BVB has signed national players Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck for his position.
