Mehmet Scholl defends sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and tells funny anecdotes

Former Bayern star Mehmet Scholl broke a lance for sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. Scholl also told funny anecdotes from playing together with the record champions.

“I love Brazzo, he was one of my favorite players,” said Scholl in the podcast “Einfach mal Luppen” by Toni and Felix Kroos. He played for Bayern Munich with Salihamidzic from 1998 to 2007 and won the Champions League in 2001, among other things.

The Bosnian sports director is now at Bayern – and has come under criticism due to the sporting crisis and the change of coach from Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel. “Brazzo makes it totally authentic and the way he is. I look at the transfers and he does a good job,” emphasized Scholl. And further: “All of us former players must not act as if we had always won everything and had not had such phases.”

Scholl also commented on the sporting decline at Bayern: “There is a lot of confusion at the moment. You can see that in the Mainz game. Everyone wants to, but nobody can give more commands, so that the team breaks up when there is counter-pressure. There was one whole time at Schalke 04 or at HSV. The team played well until it was 0-1 and then they break up”.

Scholl also had a few anecdotes ready:

  • “He said to me when I had to go to the doping control: ‘You don’t have to go today, Mehmet. 70,000 people saw that you weren’t doped today.'”
  • “I think he has an artificial right hip because he had to run for me.”
  • “A new player was bought for him every year. The coaches loved him. He had a lactate value of 5.0. They thought it was a measurement error. We almost had to run again because of him.”
  • “He always kept his heart on the field and always marched ahead. No matter who they bought, he always played – and that’s what we wanted.”
