Mug throwing scandal in Bochum: charges brought against suspects

After the cup throwing scandal in the Bundesliga, the public prosecutor’s office in Bochum brought charges against the suspect for dangerous bodily harm. This was announced by the authority together with the Bochum police headquarters on Friday.

The 38-year-old from Bochum was interrogated a week and a half ago, but had not commented on the matter. According to the statement, the suspicion is based “essentially on witness statements, the viewed and evaluated TV pictures and on molecular genetic examinations of the seized crime tool”.

In the VfL Bochum game against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-2) on March 18, assistant referee Christian Gittelmann was hit on the head by a beer mug from one of the front rows on the sidelines. The encounter was canceled and the sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) now awarded 2-0 goals and three points for the guests.
