BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke was personally touched by the goal of attacker Sébastien Haller, who had recovered from testicular cancer, in the 5-1 win over SC Freiburg on Saturday. The way in which the 28-year-old returned to the team after his cancer just six months later “is a miracle for me,” said the CEO of Borussia Dortmund Ruhr news.
The 63-year-old was literally in raptures: “It’s unbelievable how mercilessly he dealt with the disease from day one.” The top scorer himself commented on his goal very emotionally: “You’re floating on a cloud. When I scored the goal, not only was the stadium on fire, but my teammates were on fire too. That gives a big boost. I hope we get it more of those moments.”
Meanwhile, Watzke warned of possible setbacks after the recent black and yellow series of successes: “It is important to me that the people involved can correctly assess and evaluate the situation. And with all the quality that we have in our squad – there will be setbacks despite the great series, I’m sure to give it again at the moment.” In the new year, BVB celebrated four Bundesliga victories in a row.
