RB Leipzig - 1. FC Köln 3: 1: Nkunku dream goal paves victory against harmless billy goats

Borussia Dortmund won the first district derby after FC Schalke 04 was promoted again 1-0 (0-0) and temporarily shot up to the top of the table – but with Marco Reus the captain will probably be out for a long time.

  • In front of 81,365 spectators in the sold-out Signal-Iduna-Park, Youssoufa Moukoko scored the goal for Dortmund’s victory in the 79th minute.
  • At BVB, captain Marco Reus suffered an apparently serious injury in a duel with Florian Flick and had to be replaced in the 32nd minute.
  • FC Schalke 04 has been waiting for an away win in the Bundesliga since November 23, 2019.

BVB – Schalke 04: The analysis

Edin Terzic broke the more defensive basic order from the ManCity game and went for a 4-3-3 – in the knowledge that BVB will have the ball and set the pace of the game. But Dortmund once again revealed that they struggle to find solutions when they need to make the game. They didn’t know what to do with possession of up to 72 percent in the first round. Striker Anthony Modeste again had only eleven ball actions in the first 45 minutes.

Schalke 04 initially did without the offensive game and had an expected goal value of 0.0 after 45 minutes. With exactly 0 shots on goal, no surprise either. Even the few chances after set pieces remained fruitless. On the other hand, Schalke worked defensively, closed the center against the ball with eleven players in their own half – there was no space between the chains. BVB carried only three percent (!) of its attacks through the center.

BVB sought salvation in the outside positions, but rarely crossed because the space was closed. The two full-backs Thomas Meunier and Marius Wolf moved up a lot, both had significantly more ball actions in the opposing half, but only after Youssoufa Moukoko and Karim Adeyemi brought in a little more speed in the actions. That’s how the goal fell.

Schalke 04 defended brilliantly for a long time, but when their strength waned, the duels and occupations were no longer as intense. It was also clear that Schalke was getting tired because there was simply no relief – not even after Kenan Karaman and Co.

BVB – Schalke 04: The lineups

BVB: A. Meyer – Meunier, Hummels, N. Schlotterbeck, M. Wolf – Bellingham, Özcan, Brandt, Reus (32. Reyna), Malen (64. Adeyemi) – Modeste (64. Moukoko)

Schalke: Schwolow – Matriciani, van den Berg, Yoshida, T. Mohr – Krauß, Flick, J. Larsson (58th Karaman), Drexler, Bülter (76th Kral) – Terodde (58th Polter)

BVB – Schalke 04: The voices of the game

Edin Terzic (BVB coach): “It was a very intense derby and it wasn’t easy. We were very aggressive and clear, even if we didn’t have that many chances to score in the first half. We’re very happy. We knew it was going to be passionate and emotional, so we embraced that .”

Frank Kramer (Schalke coach): “We put up a great fight in a great atmosphere. We defended powerfully and gave little, but we couldn’t prevent the pressure from increasing. Unfortunately, we didn’t defend it precisely enough in one scene.”

BVB – Schalke 04: The data of the game

Goal: 1-0 Moukoko (79′)

Edin Terzic is the first BVB coach since Karl-Heinz Feldkamp in 1982/83 to win his first two district derbies in the Bundesliga.

Marco Reus completed his 250th Bundesliga game for BVB (110 goals, 67 assists).

The star of the game: Marius Wolf

The all-rounder replaced the ailing Raphael Guerreiro in the starting XI and worked tirelessly down the left flank, repeatedly running behind Malen for combinations and also holding up well physically. Outstanding his flank to 1:0 by Moukoko. When you need him, Wolf is there. Same with the derby.

The flop of the game: Anthony Modeste

If BVB doesn’t base its entire offensive concept on the attacker, Modeste is as good as useless and that’s how he acted in this game. It’s one thing that he doesn’t get balls. However, it cannot be expected that you will not be able to threw the balls into the box at random so that Modeste can head the ball.

The referee: Dr. Felix Brych

In a largely calm and fair derby, the referee had no problems at all. Very clear in communication and was absolutely right with every one of his yellow cards. Even when Schalke called for yellow-red for Modeste, it was right to leave the card in place.
