Bayer Leverkusen have sent a strong signal to the competition in the Bundesliga by extending top attacker Patrik Schick’s contract.
“Renewing with such a player is an expression of our ambitions and a clear sign that things will continue at the top level at Bayer 04 Leverkusen even after my departure,” said the outgoing sporting director Rudi Völler. Schick is “one of the best center forwards in the world”. According to sporting director Simon Rolfes, the center forward is “absolutely world class” and also has “the skills of a leading player”.
After the departure of Dortmund’s Erling Haaland to Manchester City and the rumors of a move from Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski to FC Barcelona, Schick was publicly traded as a successor candidate for both top German clubs, although Bayer had actually issued a clear ban on switching for the summer.
“I just feel good here,” the 26-year-old explained his extension. He sees “a promise for the future in the team. It’s a lot of fun with these guys and we’re really keen to do something. Qualifying for the Champions League is a good next step. A lot is possible here. “
Schick switched from AS Roma to the Rhine in September 2020 for a reported fee of around 25 million euros. The Romans had previously lent him to RB Leipzig, but the Saxons decided not to buy it.
