Next home game, next setback: Werder Bremen suffered a bitter defeat in front of their home crowd. The promoted team, who started the season so strongly, lost 0-1 (0-0) against FC Augsburg, missed a penalty in added time and thus missed the leap to fifth place.
The Augsburg attacker Ermedin Demirovic (63rd) made the guests cheer with his goal. For coach Enrico Maassen’s team it was their second win of the season after three consecutive defeats. While FCA increased their points tally to six, Werder stayed on eight points, seven of which the Green-Whites scored away.
There was excitement in stoppage time after a handball by Augsburg’s Maximilian Bauer (90+1). Referee Martin Petersen decided on a penalty, and it stayed that way even after video evidence. But Marvin Ducksch failed from the point, FCA keeper Rafal Gikiewicz parried the shot (90+4). Then some Werder fans stormed into the interior.
“We played a bad game for 90 minutes,” said Bremen captain Marco Friedl DAZN: “At home we don’t get what we train in the week on the pitch. Now we’re left empty-handed.”
Bremen, who have now been waiting for a first division success in the Weser Stadium for over a year and a half, were unlucky, even when Niclas Füllkrug allegedly scored. His headed goal after a good half hour was withdrawn because teammate Anthony Jung had blocked an opponent when he crossed and was a few centimeters offside.
Werder – Augsburg: Demirovic scores the winning goal
The teams got off to an entertaining start in front of 41,000 spectators. The first few minutes belonged to the guests, who had a real asset in Florian Niederlechner. The attacker, who was in the starting XI for the first time this season, missed his greatest chance when he rounded Werder keeper Jiri Pavlenka wonderfully, but then pushed the ball too far and punched an air hole (8′).
Then Werder also took part – and got their first chances through Ducksch. First the striker failed with a header at Gikiewicz (10′), four minutes later his low shot landed in the arms of the Augsburg goalkeeper.
After the lively initial phase, however, the game flattened out more and more. The Green-Whites, where Pavlenka had to be replaced due to a thigh injury (29th), lacked ideas and wit without the injured Leonardo Bittencourt (rib problems), Augsburg was the lack of self-confidence after only three goals from the first five games despite good offensive approaches to note.
And yet the guests scored in the second half. After a Bremen corner, FCA countered skillfully. Demirovic pushed Mergim Berisha’s sharp cross over the line. Fifteen minutes before the end, Berisha also hit the crossbar.
