Jann-Fiete Arp was expected to have a great career – but nothing has come of it so far. Now the 23-year-old is harsh on himself.
“If you didn’t make it under five coaches in three different teams, then you lack the arguments if you’re honest with yourself,” said Arp den Kiel news.
At the age of 17, the striker became Hamburger SV’s youngest Bundesliga goalscorer. He received the Fritz Walter Gold Medal, moved to FC Bayern (only one compulsory game for the pros) and from there initially on loan and then last summer permanently to second division club Holstein Kiel.
His meager haul last season: one goal and two assists in 27 competitive games.
“In the past it was always the case that everyone was waiting for the knot to burst, including me. But that didn’t happen,” says Arp.
In Kiel, the man from Bad Segeberg is under contract until 2024. But he doesn’t think about giving up: “There’s nothing that helps except work. I want to get to the point where things become a matter of course. I need the necessary rest for that, and I have to work for it.”
