Borussia Dortmund is currently fighting for its first German championship since the 2011/12 season and is just one point behind FC Bayern after 31 match days in the Bundesliga. But which BVB players have actually won a championship before?
In terms of experience, FC Bayern has a huge lead over BVB, especially when it comes to previous successes. While the Munich team has won the last ten championships in a row, the championship titles for the BVB players are correspondingly limited.
However, Borussia Dortmund also has a few players who have already won championships – but not all in the Bundesliga.
BVB: These players of the current squad have already become champions
Champion in the BVB squad: Niklas Süle
Niklas Süle only moved to Borussia in Dortmund for the 2022/23 season and came from FC Bayern, which is why his name on this list is self-explanatory.
Süle joined the record champions in the 2017/18 season and from then on won five championships in a row. Accordingly, he is the biggest title hamster in the current BVB squad, especially since all other possible titles with the Munich team were won in 2020.
Champion in the BVB squad: Emre Can
But Emre Can doesn’t have to hide with his collection of titles either. In the 2012/13 season he was part of the Bayern squad that not only won the German championship but also the cup and the Champions League.
At that time, however, Can was by no means one of the regulars, but came from his own youth: in 2009 he moved from Frankfurt to the Bayern U17s.
He left Munich for Liverpool in 2014 and later went to Juventus, where he was a key player in helping win the Scudetto in Serie A twice, in 2019 and 2020. The national player has already won three championship titles.
Champions in the BVB squad: Mats Hummels
Hummels is something of a rarity in the BVB squad, as he is the only remaining BVB champion from 2011 and 2012. Nobody else from back then is still wearing black and yellow today.
Hummels has a total of six championship titles in the Bundesliga, four of them with Bayern. Before leaving for Dortmund, he was part of the Bayern squad for the 2007/08 season and returned to the Isar from 2016 to 2019, where he won three more championships – this time mostly on the pitch.
Champion in the BVB squad: Thomas Meunier
The Belgian Thomas Meunier, who is now on the sidelines at BVB, has already won championships outside of Germany in the past.
Meunier won Ligue 1 three times in a row with PSG in 2018-2020. In Germany, he still has the cup win in 2021 with BVB.
Champion in the BVB squad: Karim Adeyemi
At the age of 21, Karim Adeyemi has already become national champion three times. He won these titles with his former club Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga.
He also won the Austrian Cup three times and was European Under-21 Champion with Germany in 2021.
Champions in the BVB squad: Donyell Malen
Donyell Malen, who joined BVB in 2021, also won a championship title before his BVB time. Namely with his former club PSV Eindhoven in the 2017/18 season.
It was Malen’s only title in professional football so far.
Champions in the BVB squad: Sébastien Haller
Center forward Sébastien Haller also collected his first championship titles in the Netherlands. With Ajax Amsterdam he became champion in the Eredivisie in 2021 and 2022.
He also won the Dutch Cup with Ajax and was top scorer in 2022.
But the Frenchman has already achieved success in Germany, too, because he won the DFB Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2018 – in the final against FC Bayern. Will the next success against the record champions follow?
