Maria KeaneMario Götze has revealed that his move from Borussia Dortmund to FC Bayern in 2013 met with incomprehension, especially from the then BVB coach Jürgen Klopp.
“Maybe Klopp understood me a little, he knew me, but in this situation he was very upset that I had made this decision,” said Götze on the podcast “The Home of Football”.
Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke and sports director Michael Zorc were also “not happy” about it.
“I didn’t expect my move to cause such a stir. It was very strange for me to experience these comments and feelings at the time,” said the 29-year-old.
Götze developed into a top player under Klopp in Dortmund, which is why he still speaks very positively about the club and today’s Liverpool coach.
Götze raves about Klopp and Dortmund
“It had a big impact on my career, on my life, because we stayed there for a long time,” said the 2014 world champion about Dortmund: “This club gave me almost everything. I was very young when I started to play for Borussia Dortmund. Jürgen Klopp called me to the first team when I was 17. I was very happy that Klopp was coach at the time. It had a big influence on me to play in this great stadium. “
Klopp helped him a lot, ultimately made him a professional footballer and integrated him into the team. “He meant a lot to me and still means a lot to me,” said Götze.
And further: “Klopp helped me to stay humble and always with me, even though we had great successes. And he made me better on and off the pitch. He knows how to deal with younger and older players.”
Götze: “Klopp can be really tough”
However, Klopp is sometimes uncomfortable, explained the offensive player: “He’s very strict, both on and off the pitch. He always makes sure that the players behave correctly. If I’m late or don’t do my defensive tasks he regularly reprimanded me. Sometimes he can be really tough. “
Götze stayed in Munich for three years after moving before returning to BVB for four years in 2016. He now plays for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
