Which Bundesliga stadium offers the best fan experience? The big arena ranking

In which stadium do the spectators have the best fan experience? The German supporters are constantly arguing about this. The betting portal betway has published a study in which all football temples are ranked using various criteria. SPOX shows you the results.

The investigators consulted various sources for the assessment. The simple criteria are the seating capacity, the average number of visitors per home game in the current season, the cost of a season ticket, the price of half a liter of beer and that of a bratwurst.

Furthermore, the Google rating as well as the number of uses of the stadium hashtag on Instagram and the location of the stadium were evaluated. Accessibility for disabled visitors was also a criterion. Of course, the most sacred criterion could not be missing: the atmosphere.

For the location of the stadium, the portal used the distance from the city center as a benchmark. A separate score was created for accessibility, based on things like accessible toilets and seating for different impairments (wheelchair users, fans with visual impairments, fans with other disabilities).

18th place: BayArena (Bayer 04 Leverkusen)

  • Year of construction: 1958
  • Capacity: 30,210
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 27,295
  • Atmosphere: 3/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €440
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.60
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.90
  • Accessibility: 3.0/10

The BayArena comes off worst in the fan experience ranking. The season tickets are the second most expensive in the Bundesliga, they offer the worst atmosphere and also very poor accessibility.

17th place: PreZero Arena (TSG Hoffenheim)

  • Year of construction: 2009
  • Capacity: 30,150
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 20,794
  • Atmosphere: 4/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €262
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.70
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.90
  • Accessibility: 2.4/10

The PreZero Arena is just above the Leverkusen stadium. With an average of 20,794 spectators, Hoffenheim has the least visited stadium in the league. And that, although significantly more fans would fit in. The arena is also a disaster when it comes to accessibility. No stadium did worse than Hoffenheim’s 2.4 points in this category. After all: Only two season tickets are cheaper.

16th place: MEWA Arena (1. FSV Mainz 05)

  • Year of construction: 2011
  • Capacity: 33,305
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 26,227
  • Atmosphere: 3.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €349
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.90
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.50
  • Accessibility: 4.9/10

You can eat well in the MEWA Arena. At 3.50 euros for a bratwurst, the Mainz team shared sixth place. When it comes to drinks, we recommend the Wegbier on arrival. At 4.90 euros for half a liter of beer, it is the second most expensive. On the other hand, Mainz makes it into the top 5 for accessibility.

15th place: WWK Arena (FC Augsburg)

  • Year of construction: 2009
  • Capacity: 30,660
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 26,347
  • Atmosphere: 3.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €299
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.50
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.50
  • Accessibility: 2.8/10

In the WWK Arena, the beer prize is tied for third place. According to the study, however, the Augsburg stadium does not have any more highlights to offer. Accessibility in particular has the second worst rating of 2.8. Only two stadiums have a worse atmosphere. The rest is absolutely mediocre.

14th place: Borussia Park (Borussia Mönchengladbach)

  • Year of construction: 2004
  • Capacity: 54,042
  • Viewer average 2022/23: 50,702
  • Atmosphere: 4/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €400
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.50
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.50
  • Accessibility: 2.8/10

Despite the high stadium capacity and many average spectators, Borussia Park is far behind in the ranking. Season tickets are quite expensive (top 5) and accessibility is just as bad as in Augsburg. After all, the atmosphere was rated better with a 4/5.

13th place: Stadium An der alten Försterei (1. FC Union Berlin)

  • Year of construction: 1920
  • Capacity: 22,012
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 21,821
  • Atmosphere: 4.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €476
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.50
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.00
  • Accessibility: 3.5/10

The An der alten Försterei stadium has the lowest spectator capacity in the Bundesliga, but Union Berlin is only second to last in terms of average attendance. The season ticket costs don’t change that either, because the Irons are the front runners here at 476 euros. But you get the cheapest bratwurst (3 euros) and a really good atmosphere (4.5/5).

12th place: Allianz Arena (FC Bayern Munich)

  • Year of construction: 2005
  • Capacity: 75,024
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 75,000
  • Atmosphere: 4/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €351
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €5.50
  • Price for a bratwurst: €5.00
  • Accessibility: 6.7/10

The Bavarians don’t score in the overall ranking, but they do in terms of accessibility: the Allianz Arena is at the top with 227 spaces for wheelchair users, and there are 900 more spaces for fans with disabilities. FCB is in second place in the accessibility ranking. However, the food is the same for everyone: with 5.50 euros for the beer and 5 euros for the sausage, the spectator is losing half a fortune. Both are top prizes in the league.

11th place: Red Bull Arena (RB Leipzig)

  • Year of construction: 2004
  • Capacity: 47,069
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 45,873
  • Atmosphere: 3/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €290
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.70
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.70
  • Accessibility: 4.8/10

The Leipzig stadium is average in all respects – except for one. At 3.0, the atmosphere in the stadium was rated the worst (shared with the BayArena).

10th place: Vonovia Ruhrstadion (VfL Bochum)

  • Year of construction: 1979
  • Capacity: 27,599
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 25,312
  • Atmosphere: 3.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: 300 €
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.30
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.20
  • Accessibility: 3.6/10

Life is good in Bochum’s Ruhrstadion. There is the cheapest beer. In addition, VfL is in third place when it comes to sausage prices. There is a minus point for the third lowest viewer average. Admittedly only Union has a lower capacity. The stadium has an average occupancy rate of 92 percent.

9th place: RheinEnergieStadion (1. FC Cologne)

  • Year of construction: 2004
  • Capacity: 50,000
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 49,700
  • Atmosphere: 4.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €324
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.90
  • Price for a bratwurst: €4.10
  • Accessibility: 4/10

The RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne is always full. And that, although the catering prices deliver almost top values. Only in Bavaria do you pay more for beer and sausage. But the atmosphere is great, the Cologne team are tied for third place.

8th place: Volkswagen Arena (VfL Wolfsburg)

  • Year of construction: 2002
  • Capacity: 30,000
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 26,291
  • Atmosphere: 4.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €220
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.30
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.20
  • Accessibility: 4/10

VfL Wolfsburg offers a decent stadium all around. Beer and sausage are just as cheap as in Bochum, but the atmosphere is said to be much better. In addition, the Volkswagen Arena scores particularly well with the low admission prices. With 220 euros you offer the second cheapest season ticket price.

7th place: Europa-Park Stadium (Sport-Club Freiburg)

  • Year of construction: 2021
  • Capacity: 34,700
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 34,225
  • The atmosphere: –
  • Price of a season ticket: €369
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.60
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.30
  • Accessibility: 5.2/10

SC Freiburg offers the newest stadium in the Bundesliga. It was only opened a year and a half ago, so there is no ranking of the atmosphere yet. The arena, known to fans as the “Mooswald Stadium”, scores particularly well in terms of accessibility. Despite the below-average capacity, Freiburg has the fourth most seats for wheelchair users and the second most accessible toilets.

6th place: Wohninvest Weserstadion (SV Werder Bremen)

  • Year of construction: 1947
  • Capacity: 42,100
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 41,220
  • Atmosphere: 5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €320
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.90
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.50
  • Accessibility: 3.8/10

If you value a great atmosphere the most, Bremen is the place for you. The Weser Stadium is the only one that achieves the best value for atmosphere with 5/5. Since there are no negative anomalies, there is nothing wrong with celebrating with the fans.

5th place: Deutsche Bank Park (Eintracht Frankfurt)

  • Year of construction: 2005
  • Capacity: 51,500
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 50,200
  • Atmosphere: 4.6/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €334
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.70
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.80
  • Accessibility: 4.4/10

The Frankfurt “Waldstadion” is currently being expanded. Because with 50,200 spectators, the SGE is in fifth place, but only has the eighth largest stadium. In addition, the fans party here almost as well as in Bremen: With 4.6/5, Deutsche Bank Park received the second-best atmosphere.

4th place: Veltins Arena (FC Schalke 04)

  • Year of construction: 2001
  • Capacity: 62,271
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 61,344
  • Atmosphere: 4.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €364
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.60
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.10
  • Accessibility: 4.2/10

Schalke just missed the podium. The Veltins Arena has the third highest capacity and a good atmosphere. In addition, the bratwurst is only cheaper at Union.

3rd place: Mercedes-Benz Arena (VfB Stuttgart)

  • Year of construction: 2011
  • Capacity: 60,449 (currently only 47,500 places due to renovation)
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 46,192
  • Atmosphere: 4.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €315
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.50
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.80
  • Accessibility: 7.2/10

The Mercedes-Benz Arena currently has to do without many spectators because the stadium is being renovated. That’s why the capacity and average number of viewers are only average. In return, VfB offers the best accessibility in the Bundesliga and has a score of 7.2. Only Bavaria has more seats for wheelchair users, but Stuttgart has the most accessible toilets. The stadium also performs above average in other respects. Only the sausage price is higher than average.

2nd place: Olympic Stadium (Hertha BSC)

  • Year of construction: 1934
  • Capacity: 74,475
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 45,984
  • Atmosphere: 4.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €199
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.50
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.70
  • Accessibility: 5.1/10

The Berlin Olympic Stadium ended up in second place in the ranking. The average attendance of 45,984 is perfectly fine across the Bundesliga, but the huge total capacity often makes the stadium seem a bit empty. But that doesn’t detract from the atmosphere. In addition, the fans only have to pay 199 euros for the season ticket – you won’t see cheaper football anywhere else. This means that both the cheapest and the most expensive stadium in terms of tickets are in the capital.

1st place: Signal Iduna Park (Borussia Dortmund)

  • Year of construction: 1974
  • Capacity: 81,365
  • Average attendance 2022/23: 80,899
  • Atmosphere: 4.5/5
  • Price of a season ticket: €435
  • Price for a beer (0.5l): €4.70
  • Price for a bratwurst: €3.50
  • Accessibility: 3.9/10

The best fan experience is in Dortmund’s “Westfalenstadion”. With almost 81,000 spectators, most fans come to the Dortmund Arena, although season tickets are the second most expensive. The atmosphere is good too: 4.5/5 is shared third place. The largest fan capacity in Germany is characterized here, because in all other rankings BVB did average.
