Who is coming to Europe? What happens if there is a tie?

Bayer Leverkusen could secure Germany an eighth place by winning the Europa League.

In the Bundesliga, the fight for starting places in a European competition for the coming season is very exciting. We show you who will play in Europe in 2023/24 and what happens if two clubs have the same number of points at the end of the season.

In the Bundesliga, the 2022/23 season will be more exciting than it has been for several years. Before matchday 33, most of the decisions regarding the championship, the allocation of starting places in the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League for the coming season and relegation are still open.

So far it is only clear that the two championship contenders FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will play in the Champions League in 2023/24.

Who even makes it to Europe and how does it work if at the end of the season two teams are tied on points in a place that is relevant for qualification for a European competition? We will show you that in the following section.

Bundesliga: Who is coming to Europe? What happens if there is a tie?

Based on the UEFA five-year ranking, the Bundesliga is again entitled to seven places in the European Cup in the 2023/24 season: four for the group stage of the Champions League (places one to four in the final table), two for the group stage of the Europa League (fifth in the final table and Cup winners) and one for the playoffs of the Conference League (sixth in the final table).

Should RB Leipzig win the DFB Cup final and also qualify directly for the Champions League as one of the top 4 at the end of the season, sixth place in the final table would move up to the Europa League and seventh place would take the vacant place in the Champions League. This also applies if Leipzig finishes the season in fifth place. Should Frankfurt win the DFB Cup and still climb to sixth place in the table – Eintracht can’t do any more – the seventh would also start in the Conference League.

The Bundesliga can increase its contingent to eight places – as was the case this season. That happens if Bayer Leverkusen wins the Europa League 2022/23 and is not in a place with a European qualification at the end of the season.

If, after 34 Bundesliga matchdays, two teams are tied on points in positions relevant for the allocation of international places, for example fourth and fifth place, the goal difference decides the place in the table. If the goal difference is also identical, the number of goals scored decides. If both teams have scored the same number of goals, the direct comparison will be considered. If no decision has been made even then, the following criteria apply.

  • the number of goals scored away from home in direct comparison.
  • the total number of goals scored away from home.
  • If the total number of goals scored away from home is also the same, a play-off takes place on a neutral pitch.
