Who will be German champion? What happens if there is a tie?

FC Bayern (red) and BVB are in an exciting race for the championship this season.

In the Bundesliga, FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are in a very exciting race for the championship after matchday 32. We show you what happens if the two clubs have the same number of points after matchday 34.

Since 2013 there has only been one champion in Germany: FC Bayern Munich! The record champions usually secured the title several games before the end of the season – last season, for example, after the 31st game day. This season, however, the title race after 32 match days is more exciting than it has been for years. With FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, two more clubs can become German champions.

Before matchday 33, FC Bayern leads the table with 68 points, just one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund. Coach Thomas Tuchel’s team has it in their own hands to become German champions again – the easiest way to do that is with two wins at the end of the season. BVB, on the other hand, has to hope for mistakes from their overpowering competitor in recent years and diligently score points themselves.

FC Bayern welcomes RB Leipzig on matchday 33 before going to 1. FC Köln on matchday 34. BVB meets FC Augsburg away from home before they play Mainz 05 on the last day of the game – on paper the rest of the program is a bit easier.

Who will be German champion? What happens if there is a tie?

The regulations of the German Football League (DFL) clearly state which team is the German champion after 34 match days. The number of points scored counts first – this means that the team with the most points is the champion. But what happens when FC Bayern and BVB are level on points after 34 match days this season? Then other criteria for determining the German champion 2023 will be considered.

This is the case, for example, if BVB gets four points from the remaining two games, while FC Bayern only draws three or Dortmund draws again, but Bayern Munich lose both games.

In the case of a tie in the Bundesliga, the goal difference decides first – in other European leagues a direct comparison is then considered. FC Bayern currently has a goal difference of +55 (89:34), BVB +36 (78:42). So if both clubs are level on points after 34 games, there is a lot to be said for FC Bayern as champions at the moment.

In the unlikely event that FC Bayern and BVB have the same number of points and the same goal difference at the end of the season, the number of goals scored will decide. If this number is also identical, the direct comparison that FC Bayern won after a 2-2 win in the first half of the season and a 4-2 home win in the second half of the season against BVB will decide.
