The trophy for winning the German championship.

FC Bayern Munich has been the champion of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season since April 23 and will be presented with the championship trophy this Sunday against VfB Stuttgart. Why is this the case now? SPOX provides the answer.

FC Bayern Munich will remain on the throne of Germany’s top division for at least another year. With a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on April 23, Julian Nagelsmann’s team gave the club their tenth championship in a row.

After this triumph on matchday 31, Bayern will now also be presented with the championship trophy. More precisely: It will happen this Sunday, May 8th, after the duel with VfB Stuttgart. The game kicks off at 5.30 p.m. in the Allianz Arena.

But why is the title being handed over now when the season isn’t over yet? If you didn’t know, it’s absolutely normal for the champions to get the trophy in the last league home game of the season, provided that the decision has already been made or will be made in that game.

After the decisive sense of achievement against BVB, the Munich team first had an away game against FSV Mainz 05. Now, in the first home game after the championship, the team is officially recognized for this in front of their home crowd.

The only unusual thing this time is that the bowls are not handed over on a Saturday. Normally it was always the case that before the 34th matchday, the 33rd matchday was played completely on Saturday from 3.30 p.m. However, the German Football League (DFL) has changed that, so that only the last matchday runs completely parallel.

VfL Bochum and Arminia Bielefeld opened the Bundesliga weekend on Friday, and the next five games continued on Saturday. This Sunday there will not only be a duel between FC Bayern and VfB, who are threatened with relegation, but also before and after the games Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach (3.30 p.m.) and RB Leipzig vs. FC Augsburg (7.30 p.m.).

Frankfurt and Leipzig were still in action in the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday, which is one of the reasons why there are different game dates and kick-off times on this 33rd matchday than in previous years.
