Record champions Manchester United and defending champions Manchester City took advantage of Arsenal’s loss of another point and got closer to the Premier League champions from London.
City defeated Aston Villa 3-1 (3-0). Arsenal drew 1-1 (0-0) against FC Brentford on Saturday, but played one game less than City.
Rodri (4th), national player Ilkay Gündogan (39th) and Riyad Mahrez (45th + 1 penalty kick) scored the goals for second in the table, Ollie Watkins (61st) shortened for Villa.
Manchester United beat Leeds United 2-0 (0-0) on Sunday and are still in third place, two points behind city rivals City.
Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, lost 4-1 (3-1) to Leicester City and lost valuable ground in the fight for a Champions League spot. Meanwhile, Chelsea are not getting going before the Champions League duel with Borussia Dortmund. With Kai Havertz, the Blues only drew 1-1 (1-1) against West Ham United.
Southampton bottom, meanwhile, has reacted to its negative series and parted ways with team manager Nathan Jones a day after the 2-1 (1-0) defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Jones had succeeded former Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhüttl at the Saints last November. Under the Welshman’s management, they have celebrated just one win in eight league games.
