Harry Maguire has a difficult time with the fans on the island and seems to magically attract scorn and ridicule. The Manchester United captain gave his critics new food last weekend.
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has once again earned ridicule on social media with a curious action. Reason this time: The Red Devils’ defense chief chose the wrong side in the players’ tunnel before the botched season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion (1: 2).
In a video with pictures from Sky Sports can be seen Maguire leading his teammates down the right flank. However, as the home team at Old Trafford, the Red Devils stand on the left side and march onto the field from there.
Manchester United: De Gea corrected Maguire
Correspondingly confused, David De Gea looked at his captain. The Spain keeper finally pointed out the faux pas to Maguire, who signaled for Brighton’s captain Lewis Dunk to make a quick swap.
Maguire’s mix-up may have something to do with the fact that the home and away teams’ benches were swapped at the request of new United manager Erik ten Hag. This season, United’s players have been seated closer to the Stretford End, the stand where the atmosphere is set in the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
Harry Maguire: Always a target
Maguire has been at Man United since 2019, when he joined from Leicester City for more than €80m. A short time later he took over the captain’s armband. Ten Hag confirmed Maguire in his post four weeks ago.
Again and again, Maguire is the target of ridicule and criticism from his own fans. Curiously, in mid-March he complained against Everton about the handball of his then teammate Nemanja Matic. Experts such as ex-professional Rafael van der Vaart or Bayern star Alphonso Davies have also expressed doubts about Maguire and his role in the past.
