Fourth division side Grimsby Town caused a sensation in the English FA Cup. The blatant outsider surprisingly won 2-1 (1-0) at FC Southampton in the round of 16. Manchester United instead advanced to the next round after falling behind.
Midfielder Gavan Holohan scored both goals for the visitors, who last played top-flight in 1948. The Irishman converted a hand penalty (45+1), and in the 50th minute he scored a penalty kick from the spot. Southampton, bottom of the table in the Premier League, only managed to get a goal through Duje Caleta-Cur (65th).
Another surprise was the 1-0 (0-0) victory of the second division Sheffield United against Tottenham Hotspur. Another second division side, FC Burnley, reached the quarter-finals with a 1-0 (0-0) win over third division side Fleetwood Town. Manchester United also went one round further, the English record champions beat West Ham United 3-1 (0-0).
