Ilkay Gundogan assumes he will stay at Manchester City

Ilkay Gundogan assumes that he will also play for Manchester City in the coming season. The national player also commented on newcomer Erling Haaland.

“That will show,” said Gündogan in an interview with the FAZ about his future with the English champions and held out the prospect of staying: “But based on the current status, I assume so.”

Gundogan has a contract with Manchester City until 2023. In the past few weeks there had been speculation about an early departure because apparently there had been no negotiations about extending the working paper.

If he were to stay, the 31-year-old would play with Erling Haaland for the new season. Gündogan is looking forward to the new signing from Borussia Dortmund: “We’ve seen that, especially in tight games, we might need someone who has the physical strength to win duels, hold the ball and even score a goal to force by head.”

Manchester City had lacked these qualities several times in important games in the past. For example, in the semifinals in the Champions League against Real Madrid. Gündogan had not watched the final between the royal and Liverpool FC because of the great disappointment.

“I didn’t want to see it. Well, there was a bit of displacement, if I’m honest. I really wanted to be in this final,” said Gündogan, who would have given Reds coach Jürgen Kopp the title in particular: “I still have a close connection with him, but the game didn’t really affect me.”
