Julian Nagelsmann: consultant confirms rejection of Chelsea

Julian Nagelsmann’s advisor Volker Struth has confirmed that there was contact between the coach fired by FC Bayern and Chelsea. However, Nagelsmann canceled the blues.

There were “very quick phone calls” with Chelsea, Struth explained in the podcast “Phrasen Mäher”. Picture: “Julian was number one. I think it would have happened if Julian had wanted to.”

Nagelsmann was released from Bayern Munich on March 24th. About a week later, Chelsea FC fired team manager Graham Potter before club legend Frank Lampard took over the team on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Why didn’t Nagelsmann want to join the blues? “You are just finding yourself and I am also honored that I am your number one here, but I have decided for myself: This is not the right step for me at the moment,” said the 35-year-old to the club management Notified owner Todd Boehly.

In Struth’s eyes the right decision. “This is a club swimming in choppy waters,” he said. “You’re taking over a troupe that has invested a few hundred million in the last year and a half. And then you have to live up to that claim.” Chelsea is currently only eleventh in the Premier League, and Mauricio Pochettino is expected to take over for the new season.

What’s next for Nagelsmann? His contract with Bayern runs until 2026. For Struth, “only big international clubs are currently suitable for Julian.” In the Bundesliga, however, BVB and Leipzig currently have no need. And what about the Tottenham Hotspur? The Spurs were also traded as potential employers for Nagelsmann.

“Tottenham need to hire a sporting director first,” said Struth. However, he did not rule out that his client would coach Spurs at some point.

Struth also commented on Nagelsmann’s dismissal process at Bayern – and drew the ire of FCB sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. Here is the detailed news.
